Gear guide · Food storage

The best freeze-dried emergency food.

One Mountain House Just In Case 3-Day kit per person is the baseline. Add a Mountain House Essential bucket for a deeper pantry. If protein matters more than a 30-year shelf life, look at Peak Refuel's Entree Essentials 2.0, though it was sold out at Peak Refuel when we checked on 2026-10-11. All three are just-add-water pouches, so you need water and a way to heat it.

How we chose

Contents, calories and shelf life come from the makers. Taste and real-world verdicts come from Wirecutter, whose five-person panel tasted 17 meals from five brands. We don’t run taste tests ourselves, and we haven’t joined any of these brands’ affiliate programs.

What actually matters

Pouch or stovetop. Freeze-dried pouches like these rehydrate in the bag with hot water in about 10 minutes, Wirecutter notes, and work with cold water in a pinch. Bulk stovetop kits are cheaper but need a pot, a stove and somewhere to keep leftovers. In an outage, that’s a big ask.

Count calories, not servings. “18 servings” sounds like a lot. The Mountain House 3-day kit works out to about 1,706 calories a day. Plan extra snacks if you’ll be working hard.

Water is part of the food. Mountain House says the 3-day kit needs 12 cups of water, about three-quarters of a gallon, on top of what you drink. For other kits, follow the water amount printed on each pouch. Store it with the water you already planned.

Store it cool, dry and off the floor. Shelf-life claims assume good conditions. Wirecutter’s experts warn that heat swings shorten them, and that a rat will get through a pouch. If it smells off or shows mold, throw it out.

Swaps we made

Augason Farms 72-Hour kit. Wirecutter’s budget pick, and the best-tasting in its panel. But it needs a stove and pot, and on Oct 10, 2026, the product page on Augason Farms’ site redirected to its homepage. We’ll add it back once we can confirm it’s sold.

Peak Refuel Basecamp 3.0. Wirecutter’s upgrade pick isn’t listed on Peak Refuel’s own store right now. The Entree Essentials 2.0 we picked shares its best-rated meal, the chicken alfredo.

ReadyWise. Wirecutter’s ReadyWise stovetop kit came last in its taste test. ReadyWise’s freeze-dried pouch line hasn’t been tested by Wirecutter yet, so we’re holding off.
