How we pick
Updated October 11, 2026
We pick gear by researching manufacturer specs, official preparedness guidance and independent published tests. We do not test products ourselves. Each pick is chosen for a specific household and situation, with a clear reason to skip it.
1. Start with the situation
A five-day outage, a week without safe tap water, a fast evacuation. We start with what actually happens, then choose gear for it.
2. Read the evidence
We compare manufacturer specs with official guidance (Ready.gov, CDC, EPA, FCC, Red Cross) and independent tests, link our sources and explain disagreements.
3. Be honest about testing
Our guides are research-based · not lab-tested. We use published specs and measurements and never claim hands-on testing.
4. Safety first
We flag the risks that hurt people: generators and stoves indoors, unsafe water, expired food, fuel storage. Firearms-related content follows our safety & legal policy.
5. Keep money out of the picks
Brands cannot pay for inclusion. Affiliate commissions do not determine our picks or rankings. Affiliate disclosure.
6. Keep prices honest
Store buttons open the retailer’s product page. Any price we show carries the date we checked it; Amazon prices stay on Amazon.
7. Keep it current
We date store-link checks and substantive updates. Read our corrections policy.
