The best budget red dots for your rifle.

Get the SIG ROMEO5. It wakes up when the rifle moves, ships with two mounts, and the ROMEO5 line is Pew Pew Tactical's runner-up budget dot. If it's out of stock, the Primary Arms SLx Microdot has a longer rated battery life and a lifetime warranty. The ROMEO-MSR Gen II is SIG's cheaper option with a co-witness riser. Each was listed below 150 dollars at the store we link when we checked on 2026-10-11.

How we chose

We looked for 1x rifle red dots with a 2 MOA dot, a long rated battery life and a real warranty, sold by the maker. Specs come from SIG Sauer and Primary Arms; the independent take comes from Pew Pew Tactical’s budget red dot roundup. We don’t do range tests, and we haven’t joined any affiliate program. We don’t link to Amazon for optics.

Why a red dot

A red dot gives you one aiming point you can use with both eyes open, so you still see what’s around you. For a home, ranch or truck rifle that’s mostly about fast, close shots, a 1x dot is simpler than a scope. Get it zeroed at a range, and practice.

What matters on a budget

  • Battery life and auto-on. A dot you forget to switch on is useless. The ROMEO5’s motion sensor solves it; the other two need a habit.
  • Mount height. On an AR, you want a riser so the dot sits at iron-sight height. The ROMEO5 and ROMEO-MSR include one.
  • Warranty. All three makers offer lifetime-style coverage. Keep your proof of purchase anyway.

Laws and shipping

Rules on what you can mount, carry or ship vary by state and city, and SIG flags some products as “restricted in some areas.” Check your state and local law. See our safety & legal policy.

Swaps we made

Holosun ARO. Pew Pew Tactical’s pistol pick is a Holosun, but Holosun’s own store and Primary Arms both listed the ARO rifle dot above our budget when we checked.

Vortex Crossfire. Vortex lists it well above the street prices you’ll see, so we couldn’t confirm a store price in budget from the maker.

SIG ROMEO5 Gen II. Pew Pew Tactical’s runner-up is the newer Gen II. Primary Arms listed it just over our budget when we checked, so we picked the original, which SIG still sells.
