Gear guide · Safe storage

The best quick-access pistol safes and ammo storage.

For most homes: the Vaultek VT Series, with four ways in and an alarm if someone bumps or hits it. Don't trust fingerprint readers? The Hornady RAPiD 2700KP opens with a wristband tap, and the Fort Knox PB1 has a mechanical lock with no battery at all. Store ammo separately in a sealed can like the MTM AC50C, somewhere cool and dry. Check your state's storage law first.

How we chose

Specs come from the makers. Reliability notes come from Pew Pew Tactical, and storage guidance from SAAMI, the industry’s standards body. We don’t test safes ourselves, and we haven’t joined any of these brands’ affiliate programs.

Quick access, locked the rest of the time

A quick-access safe keeps a firearm close at hand and locked against people who shouldn’t have it. No safe makes a home child-proof on its own: kids watch codes, find keys and borrow tags. Pick the entry method you’ll still get right half-asleep in the dark:

  • Fingerprint is fast when it reads, but readers miss with wet or cold fingers. Pew Pew Tactical found Vaultek’s reader worked about 90% of the time on an earlier model, while the keypad never failed. Learn the code too.
  • RFID (Hornady) opens with a tap, but whoever holds the tag can open it.
  • Mechanical (Fort Knox) never needs a battery. Practice the button sequence by feel.

Bolt or cable the safe down; a box that walks away isn’t storage. And keep the keys and tags as secure as the safe.

Know your state’s law

Storage rules differ by state and city, and some states have child-access or safe-storage laws. California, for example, keeps a roster of approved firearm safety devices. Check your state and local law before you buy. Our safety & legal policy explains how we cover firearms topics. Project ChildSafe has free safe-storage resources.

How to store ammo so it lasts

SAAMI’s guidance, in short:

  • Keep it in the original box or packaging made for ammo.
  • Store it somewhere cool and dry, away from solvents, chemicals, heat and open flame.
  • Don’t leave it in a car on a hot day. SAAMI says to avoid temperatures over 150°F.
  • Keep it separate from firearms and out of reach of anyone who shouldn’t have it.

A sealed can with an O-ring keeps out humidity; add a desiccant pack if your basement is damp. Label each can with the caliber and the date you bought it, and use the oldest first.

Swaps we made

SentrySafe QAP1BE. Some roundups recommend it as a budget biometric box. We haven’t checked it against SentrySafe’s own specs yet, so it’s out for now.

Steel surplus ammo cans. Tough and cheap, but a used can’s condition depends on the seller, so we picked new cans with published specs.
